CONTRA-TIEMPO Residency with NC State LIVE | Fall 2020

NC State LIVE is so excited to partner with NC State’s Dance Program to bring the award-winning Los-Angeles dance company CONTRA-TIEMPO to Raleigh from October 18-25, 2019. The company will be busy on and off campus with pop up performances, setting work on NC State student dancers, teaching classes in schools and community centers, leading artist conversations, film screenings, salsa lessons, and more! The week will be punctuated by a performance of joyUS justUS on October 25, CONTRA-TIEMPO’s newest dance work featuring live music by Las Cafeteras and cameo appearances by NC State students, alumni, and community members form across the Triangle!

All NC State Students are invited to audition to for a dance piece choreographed by CONTRA-TIEMPO that will be performed in the spring 2020 Dance Program’s Concert.

Jannet Galdamez, a dancer from CONTRA-TIEMPO’s joyUS justUS, will perform an Afro-Caribbean section of the piece during the Sunday Eucharistic Mass. Following the service, Jannet will lead an Urban Latin Dance Theater Technique class for youth liturgical dancers from St. Ambrose and other local churches.

Hip Hop is an American art form, rooted in African American and Latinx communities. Originally born in the Bronx, NY, Hip Hop has evolved and grown into a worldwide phenomenon. CONTRA-TIEMPO’s Hip Hop Grooves class works with dancers to embody movement, rhythms and grooves. The class will help dancers build movement language, connection and confidence – ultimately to build community. Participants will be given a discount code to use for joyUS justUS.

Join with fellow students, faculty and staff in this rare opportunity for community art-making, “holding space” to hear each other’s stories, and building deep and meaningful connections through creative and generative practice.

CONTRA-TIEMPO will share a ‘performance offering’ from their newest work, joyUS justUS. Participants will then be led in several movement experiences, embodying joy and connection. Lab participants identify any of the themes in joyUS justUS (radical joy, race, restorative justice, the sacred feminine, and more) to address in the Lab. Snacks will be provided.

They Are We tells the story of the Ganga-Longoba, a small Afro-Cuban ethnic group in Central Cuba, and of the village their ancestors called home in West Africa. It is the story of how, just very occasionally, a family separated by the slave trade can reunite for the good of all. After screening the film, members of CONTRA-TIEMPO will facilitate a post-show discussion with the audience.

Ana Maria Alvarez, artistic director of CONTRA-TIEMPO, creates dances that boldly traverse the worlds of social dance, political activism, community organizing and art making. She is a two-time grantee of NEFA National Dance Project, seven time grantee of National Association of Latino Arts and Cultures, five time grantee of the Center for Creative Innovation and the recipient of the 2015 and 2017 Engaging Dance Audiences Grant administered by DanceUSA. While her works have been seen across the world, she is also a dedicated educator in her local community – CONTRA-TIEMPO’s School Residency Program has reached thousands of students throughout Los Angeles County. During this pre-show talk, audience members will have the opportunity to ask Ana Maria about her background, influences, and learn about what goes into an ambitious community-created project like joyUS justUS.

The fierce minds of multilingual Los Angeles-based dance company CONTRA-TIEMPO have concocted joyUS justUS, an urban-Latin dance and music experience that melds community stories with powerful social dance (think salsa, hip hop, Afro-Cuban jams). Prepare yourself for live music by Las CafeterasNPR calls them “fresh and smart, ” this indie-Latinx band born in East L.A. has taken the music scene by storm. Experience radical joy through uplifting dance and infectious music. Cameo performances by community members from across the Triangle.

ADDITIONAL EDUCATIONAL EVENTS

In addition to the public events above, CONTRA-TIEMPO is engaging with youth across the Triangle through the following events.

Urban Latin Dance Technique Class with:

  • LEAP Team from NC Arts in Action
  • St. Ambrose Church youth liturgical dancers

Led by professional dancers from CONTRA-TIEMPO, this full bodied movement form is the signature technique of the company. Although there are five specific fundamental qualities/values of the form, it continues to evolve and grow with each new generation of movers. Urban Latin Dance Theater will give students access to their fullest self-expression and movement possibilities. The form acknowledges each human beings’ unique contributions.

Hip Hop Grooves Class with:

  • Southeast Raleigh High School
  • Apex Friendship High School

Sabor Sessions with:

  • Green Road Park Community Center
  • Roberts Park Community Center

From the Spanish word for “flavor” CONTRA-TIEMPO’s “Sabor Session” bring their dancers out into the community. Company members guide participants in Afro-Latin social dance forms that are rooted in radical joy. Additionally, CONTRA-TIEMPO will share an excerpt from joyUS justUS.

Choreographic Lab with El Pueblo’s Youth Council

CONTRA-TIEMPO’s Choreographic Lab is a rare opportunity for community art-making, “holding space” to hear each other’s stories, and building deep and meaningful connections through creative and generative practice. CONTRA-TIEMPO will share a ‘performance offering’ from their newest work, joyUS justUS. Participants will then be led in several movement experiences, embodying joy and connection. Lab participants as a group will identify any of the themes in joyUS justUS (radical joy, race, restorative justice, the sacred feminine, and more) to address in the Lab.

Guest lecture in NC State Dance and Society course

Dance and Society examines dance as an artistic, religious, cultural, and social form, including historic and aesthetic influences, basic dance elements, and relationship to other arts. CONTRA-TIEMPO company members will offer a guest lecture on the research and community develop process behind joyUS justUS.
