ABOUT LAKECIA BENJAMIN
The alto saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin plays jazz that is sprinkled with the rich flavors of funk and soul—she’s a crafty traditionalist who remains in step with the rhythms of the young generation.–The New Yorker
Lakecia Benjamin’s mix of talent, acumen, and intelligence is magnetic. Admired for her fiery sax work, she’s shared stages with the likes of Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys, The Roots, Macy Gray, and renowned jazz greats like Clark Terry, Reggie Workman, and Regina Carter.
Lakecia has recently been named the Up and Coming Artist of the Year by the Jazz Journalists Association and Rising Star – Alto Saxophone by the DownBeat Critics Poll.
Her hypnotic sound melds the vintage tones of James Brown, Maceo Parker, Sly and the Family Stone with soaring, dance-floor worthy rhythms.
Lakecia Benjamin’s latest project “Pursuance” is an intergenerational journey through the lineage of jazz legends Alice and John Coltrane. Benjamin pays homage to those who have come before by featuring innovative bandleaders of her generation, such as, Reggie Workman (Co-producer and playing), Ron carter, Gary Bartz, Dee Dee Bridegwater, Meshell Ndegecello, Regina Carter, Bertha Hope, Last poets, Greg Osby, Steve Wilson, John Benitez, Marc Cary, Marcus Gilmore, Keyon Harrold, Marcus Strickland, Brandee Younger, Georgia Anne Muldrow, and Jazzmeia Horn.
