About the Event
Since appearing on our stage in October 2018, Ranky Tanky has gone on to win a Grammy for their inspired music – a mix of melodies carried down through generations in the Sea Islands of South Carolina with the band’s own original Gullah compositions. Ranky Tanky (a Gullah phrase for “get funky”) has delighted audiences on The Today Show, NPR’s Fresh Air, PBS Newshour and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Ranky Tanky (a Gullah phrase for “get funky”). These five lifelong friends from Charleston, South Carolina have established themselves as passionate global ambassadors for their local culture and community, helping to faithfully preserve the traditions originated by African Americans in the coastal South during slavery that are kept alive through the present day.
This year, Ranky Tanky is teaming up with Lisa Fischer, a soulful songstress we’ve admired for years. Fischer spent four decades of featured background singing with icons like Luther Vandross, The Rolling Stones, Chaka Khan, Tina Turner and Nine Inch Nails. The 2013 Best Documentary Oscar winning film “Twenty Feet from Stardom” altered the course of Lisa’s musical journey, telling her story with clips of her legendary duets with Sting or with Mick Jagger on “Gimme Shelter.” Lisa has an undeniable power to captivate audiences with her unique voice, reinventing classics with a sound that’s all her own.
Together, Lisa Fischer and Ranky Tanky celebrate American roots culture at its finest – creating music that heals and rocks the house!
