School Matinee Series 2022-23

NC State LIVE's School Matinee Series gives school groups the opportunity to attend weekday performances that support the public school curriculum. The experience is fun for students and easy for teachers. From the moment you arrive on campus, we are with you every step of the way. Study Guides are often available to directly connect the theatre experience with your classroom goals.

Lightwire Theater’s The Tortoise and the Hare: The Next Generation

RUN TIME: Approximately 1 hour (recommended for grades K-6)

ABOUT THE SHOW:
That’s right, we’re bringing back Lightwire Theater for The Tortoise and the Hare: The Next Generation! Some of you may remember we had that performance scheduled this past year, but due to scheduling conflicts we shifted to The Ugly Duckling. The Next Generation features Tortoise Junior and Lil’ Hare in a whole new kind of race; where their adventures lead them into unexpected territory.

Old man Tortoise and Big Daddy hare must come together despite their differences to find and save their children. What hurdles will they have to overcome to make it to the finish line? With dazzling visuals, poignant storytelling and the creative use of music from classical to pop, this production brings this tale into a new brilliant light. ABOUT THE SHOW:
We’ve worked with Grammy-nominated artist, Tommy Shepherd, in 2018 and were so inspired by his collaborator, Kaitlin McGaw, that we had to bring this powerful project to the Triangle! ALPHABET ROCKERS (seen on CBS This Morning) make music that empowers and inspires children.

Founded by Kaitlin McGaw and Tommy Shepherd, this intergenerational group creates brave spaces to shape a more equitable world through hip hop. Their award winning albums inspire kids and families to stand up to bullying and be their brave and beautiful selves.

Alphabet Rockers creates their music with the community, centering children’s voices. They amplify authentic stories and shine a light on the beauty inside all of us. Witness how they do this collective work!

ABOUT THE SHOW:
Are you ready to dance with Brooklyn-based bhangra band Red Baraat!? Known worldwide for their high-energy fusion of jazz, hip-hop beats, rock muscle, funky go-go and North Indian bhangra (with founder Sunny Jain on the dhol). Back by popular demand on NC State LIVE’s stage, Red Baraat creates joy through music, sharing the music of India by mixing traditional sounds with contemporary flair. Students will love the energy of this mesmerizing band!
